about

It’s 2019 and the planet is a mess. But back with a lightning flash and new tracks are the three enigmatic individuals collectively known as Burning Alms — Thomas Whitfield, Sebastian Lenton, and John Biggs, formerly of Calories and Distophia.

Afternoon Sass was captured during a bleak English winter by recording engineer and long-term collaborator Tom Livemore, the resulting album fuses punk noise and lo-fi pop with ornate jazz flourishes, garnished with the occasional Derek Bailey-esque skronk.

Afternoon Sass is being released in Europe by Croatian label Geenger Records. Reminiscent of the likes of Superchunk, Sebadoh and Jim O'Rourke, the record is made up of nine songs including imminent single releases Every City and Everyone You Know. The album is a follow up to their previous recording, In Sequence.

Track Name: Cape Palms
Chopped in freeze dead air
Cooked to lean threadbare
Miss the clock turn off
There’s a semblance of a future at play
What do fools read on their way out
Painting thin cork ships masting soullessly
Soak the pheasant gun sleet the airplane
See the drizzle dry
Pick a mountain side
Angled south foresee
There is beauty in the slowness of day
Sass on the way down talks of midnight
Think of scenic towns
See the flowers glow
It seems way too much shades of simple
Track Name: Every City
Dim lights still on display
Short actors mould the day
Every city has a heartbeat and every angle has a page
That leans out into the rains and reads out autumnal plays
Feel every city every heartbeat
Move every angle to the stage
So jump on the alpha junk
Stir up commuter songs that feed a city in a heartbeat
Aim the spark at any page
So read on and blast the word
The rushed art is still alert
Every city has a heartbeat
On every angle there's a stage
Loose platonic animatronic death bucolic pr review
Free to chew spit the bubble influencer fashion producer pauper rich salt the slug sip the love melt
The press end frame
So move on without a sound or creep in to whispered nouns
Every city has a heartbeat and every angle has a name
Small lights still on display
Less people feel their way
Every city has a heartbeat while every angle ends a frame
Track Name: Lists of Things
Body bags are filled with gold
Milan in spring on brewery road
Lists of things that likes create
A future status mired in weight
Mainline good times party people absolutes in these times
Sweet to studio lullabies
Super 8s and salad flies
The never cares metastasize
In black out garments what’s to hide
Feels good to know the things you’ll never know
Track Name: Beast Quotations
Its with some understanding a gent sipped by a fire side
With the costings and housing a home stripped all the undersides burn
After beast quotations the small lips of a 60s man quivered and vanished like night
Goodbye goodbye the last home you’re the summertime
You’re the spring tides ebb
Please wait please wait for me there
From the stairs from the landing a girl waved with the feline eyes
From a lounge choked with laughing the old junior was mortified why
Tick the beast quotations the middling ribs of a gentleman lingered and zipped up the fly
Track Name: OST
Scene one looks good from the rushes
Draw back and bring in another piece of film
Cut light easily de-vained
Shores look good up on the green screen
Blast in the early dawn remains
Long lines the music slowly fades
Sit back and sit back and watch the stills
Drink that in drink up and watch the film
City evening airs the charities don’t care
They call out for influencer rights
The well seen are happier tonight
One house reaching out for members
Bad taste the disarray is weird
The small viles the pity and the shame
Frauds will persevere as others disappear
Hearts out to those who still surprise
Concede that art is on the rise
Track Name: Everyone You Know
Takes a long while let the change fall in
Bark the short rhyme code the rest blend thin
Burned by sold by
Everything and everyone you know
Are still around but some are laying low
Take apart every word they say
A stronger chance of keeping thoughts away
There's a lifestyle one that we can't change
Grab the small yields
Pay the work kids low
Short like their reach
Everything and everyone you know
Are still around but some are laying low
Take apart every word they say
A stronger chance of keeping thoughts away
Storms out eclectic styles
Juncker charms the anglophiles are miles away
Everything and everyone you know
Are still around but some are laying low
Take apart every word they say
A stronger chance of keeping thoughts away
Track Name: Afternoon Sass
Too many broken laws
The second clause
Shut the door
Failing to recognise it
At least share the plans
Divide them wide
One secular notion
Sinks to the bottom of the ocean
Surprised why'd you stay so late
Well yeah who knows
Ore from land thing
In awe of something
Don't dare to generalise it
One form or other
Smile take cover
Bed down to rest
Sass you're hard to see
Walk through midnight
That is overrated
Hi say hello
Remembered date wow
Stars that wander
Ignite A50 pleased to see it go
Survived like empty air strikes
Who'll ever stop you
Who'll ever stop you
We've gone too far
We'll never live this down
Separated Amazonians in a south swell
Beware those press hounds out to get you
Afternoons shady sun kissed warmth falls back
Count the joys
De-reg the paths to ergonomics
Look to the leaders ask them why
Back to sunlit
It's so easy to be unified
So wrong right from the get go
All is heavy in these hearts
Surprised by people that I know
Yet I can't say
Draw to an end
Close out the night
The sands will uncover the plans and the night
Track Name: Hack
Give back the gold
Let the fortune rules perspire
Get everything forgotten like some novels of desire
And yeah the canapes are nice to see
The day reads it less
Yet the autocrats still lead
The buried master works are in the coffers of bad dreams
And yet a war changes everything
Get down
Walk out into the street
See the faces set out
Embark on a journey to forgotten places
Peel off the mask
Dust the corners from the smiles
Wipe down the husk
Shake the bullets from the tires
And find adversaries blush for more
Power through the depths
Jerk the fly leaf from the hand
Bloat through the madness
The shift of deathly sands will end
And will this new boy be me
